Abstract:

Introduction: Hoarseness is the vocal quality most often associated to laryngeal disorders. Many times, hoarseness results from vocal abuse, although the causal factors have been divided into physical and psychological factors, including personality structure, poor phonic adjustment, and allergic factors. Objective: To evaluate vocal quality in choir people without vocal complaint, using the Voice Handicap Index. Material and Methods: We evaluated 78 people who use to participate in choirs, and 40 were female and 38 male, with median age were 31,7 years. We performed Voice Handicap Index (VHI) described by Jacobson et al. (1997). Results: Our results showed that old choir people have poor vocal quality (p=0.04), and that the presence of voice disorders was times more frequent in females than in males (p=0.043). Conclusion: We conclude that VHI is an important instrument to complementary vocal evaluation.
