Abstract:

Ozenae is a chronic nasal disease with a still unclear aetiology, characterised by progressive atrophy of the nasal mucosa and underlying bone, accompanied by nasal obstruction, foul smelling, thick, dry crusts in the greatly enlarged nasal cavities. Secundary atrophic rhinitis can occur following iatrogenic surgical procedure, becoming more common nowadays after total inferior turbinectomy. In this cases inspiratory intranasal pain is frequent. Atrophic rhinitis (AR) may be treated surgically with narrowing of the nasal fossae. This procedure improves significantly symptoms in all patients without any major complication. We believe that implant of biological material in the lateral nasal wall is the best surgical technique, and seems to be a more physiological treatment, with better results in the secondary AR following turbinectomy.
