The petrifaction of the auricle is an uncommon clinical condition in wich the auricle has become stone-hard. This situation can be due to ectopic ossification or calcification of the auricular cartilage. It generally occurs after local trauma (frostbite), but it also can be associated with some systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus, gout, hypertension, Addison\'s disease, thyroid or parathyroid disorders, and hypopituitarism. Because of the assymptomatic nature of the disease and the normal appearence of the ears, diagnosis of the petrified auricle is usually accidental. Nevertheless, the knowlegde of those associated systemic factors is crucial not for the treatment of the auricular disorder, but for the diagnosis of a silent disease.
