Abstract:

Introduction: Nasal obstruction is a common symptom in both acute and chronic nasal pathologies. Although chronic nasal obstruction is not life-threatening, it impairs patients’ quality of life in a significant way, affecting many aspects of their daily social and working activities. Perennial allergic rhinitis and nonallergic rhinitis are the most common noninfectious causes of inferior turbinate mucosal swelling, leading to a transient reduction of nasal patency. Objective: In the present work we debated on most used monitoring methods of nasal obstruction, reporting our personal experiences in the field of attempting to correlate objective tests results with patients’ subjective assessments of the severity of their pathologies. Moreover we presented our results in trying to upgrade the diagnostic sensibility of specific nasal provocation test by dosing via direct incubation in nasal mucosa the levels of ECP, tryptase and specific IgEs, before and after NPT. At last, we reviewed the long term efficacy of most commonly used surgical techniques for the reduction of turbinates hypertrophy, focusing of their impacts on nasal physiology.
