Abstract:

OBJECTIVE: In the paradigm of Modulation of Speech (Gating Speech), a "short initial segment" of the word is presented, followed for sequential presentations where the segment of the word continuously is prorogated until the full word is presented (Grosjean, 1980). The objective of this experiment was to compare the performance in the instrument has tested (Gating Speech) for young listeners with normal hearing with the performance of aged listeners with auditory loss. MATERIALS: Segments of 50-ms had been gotten digitally. The segments for each word had been presented sequentially of shortest for longest with the order of 54 words randomized for each listener. After each segment, the citizen was stimulated to guess the suspected full word. RESULTS: The data indicate that it has a direct relation between duration of the word and the threshold of duration of the segment. How much to the duration of each segment, the listeners with auditory loss had gotten worse performances of what the listeners with normal hearing. Moreover, the decline of the functions for the listeners with auditory loss was more gradual of what for the listeners with normal hearing. CONCLUSIONS: This demonstrates, still, another domain of the auditory function in which the performance of the aged listeners with auditory loss is worse that of young listeners with normal hearing.
