RHINOLITH IN THE RIGHT NASAL TANK: REPORT OF A CASE

Abstract:

INTRODUCTION: Rhinolithiasis is a rare disorder that is characterized by the presence of concretions in the nasal cavity (gradually deposited around a foreign body). Women are generally more affected than men. The most common location is in the middle third of the nasal passages and usually unilateral. Rhinolith have been found in patients from three to 76 years (more frequently between the 4th and fifth decades of life). OBJECTIVE: To report a case of rhinolithiasis, its diagnosis, the pathogenetic mechanism, the symptoms and the treatment of choice. Report Summary: AMRO, 31 years old, male, Caucasian, coming from Sorocaba, electrician, cacosmia and complained of right nasal obstruction for about 5 years, 6 months ago accompanied by fetid rhinorrhea and frontal headache in the right nasal cavity. The mother also reported the formation of crusts in the right nasal cavity every two days. At rhinoscopy and nasal endoscopy showed a foreign body on the floor of right nasal cavity. The Computerized Tomography of paranasal sinuses revealed the presence of calcium density image in the right nasal vestibule. Based on these results, it was indicated that excision endoscopicaly rhinolith. Histopathological examination revealed tooth structure within the normal range. The postoperative course was free of symptoms and no recurrence of the injury or symptoms were observed until the last patient visit (February 2012). CONCLUSION: Although rarely thought of as a cause of nasal obstruction and cacosmia, a high index of suspicion of rhinolithiasis is necessary not to delay the diagnosis.
