SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS AND HEARING LOSS IN ELDERLY
NÍVEL SÓCIOECONOMICO E PERDA AUDITIVA EM IDOSOS

Abstract:

INTRODUCTION: Due to the increasing number of elderly, it is necessary to research about the audiological profile of the group in question. OBJECTIVE: To analyze socioeconomic status and degree of hearing loss in an elderly group. METHODOLOGY: The study included individuals aged 60 years old or more. We used interview, questionnaire Brazil Criterion, otoscopy and pure tone audiometry. RESULTS: The sample consisted of 30 individuals, 28 (93.33%) females and 2 (6.66%) were male, aged between 60 and 89 years. It was found that 6 (20%) had normal hearing thresholds (LAN), 10 (33.33%) of mild hearing loss (PAL), 3 (10%) moderate hearing loss (PAM), 10 (33 33%) hearing loss limited to high frequencies (PAFA) and 1 (3.33%) hearing loss limited to low frequencies (PAFB). On socioeconomic status, 4 (13.33%) were level A2, 3 (10%) of B1, 14 (46.66%) level B2 and 9 (30%) level C1. It was observed that all the elderly hearing loss level A2 (PA), 2 (50%) PAL 1 (25%) and a PAFA (25%) PAFB. Elderly B1 also showed PA, 2 (66.7%) and a PAL (33.3%) PAFA. At level B2, 5 (35.7%) had LAN, 3 (21.42%) PAL, 2 (14.28%) PAM and 4 (28.57%) PAFA. Of the nine seniors level C1, 1 (11.11%) had LAN, 3 (33.33%) PAL, 1 (11.11%) PAM and 4 (44.44%) PAFA. CONCLUSION: There was no relationship between the presence and degree of hearing loss and socioeconomic status.
