OBJECTIVE: To analyze cases of foreign bodies in Otolaryngological sites in children treated at an emergency hospital in São Luís, MA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study by collecting data from medical records of 105 children. We analyzed the following aspects: gender, age, origin, type of foreign body insertion site of the foreign body and length of stay the same. RESULTS: The majority of cases were foreign bodies in the nasal cavities. Foreign bodies were found more beans, seeds and plastic objects. The mean residence time was 32 days. Only in two cases of this period was less than 24 hours. Discussion: The average length of stay of foreign bodies was higher than other studies, an increased risk of complications. The small number of otolaryngologists in Maranhão contributes to the dangers of the long stay of foreign children and submits to management by non-specialist. CONCLUSION: We advise that people need to recognize early symptoms related to the stay of foreign bodies to start the search for specialized care. Health authorities Maranhão, in turn, need to establish effective measures for access to urgent Otolaryngological care.
