Abstract:

OBJECTIVE: To present a case of foreign body in the esophagus in an adult, with initial presentation in the larynx. CASE REPORT: Male patient, 76 years old, sought the otolaryngology service HSJA with the report of having choked on a piece of chicken bone at dinner, reporting odynophagia, dysphagia and feeling of foreign body in the throat. Laryngoscopy demonstrated a foreign body in the supraglottic region. The patient was taken to the operating room and underwent induction of anesthesia, with sudden intense cough and choking. Direct laryngoscopy did not show the presence of foreign body in the larynx or the tracheobronchial tree, and then submitted to Rigid Esophagoscopy and viewed the foreign body in the middle third of the esophagus, carrying their withdrawal uneventful. CONCLUSION: Foreign bodies (CE) of the esophagus are common, with most found at the extremes of life: children and the elderly. Clinically manifested by sore throat, dysphagia, drooling. The specialist should be aware of patients' complaints and intervened quickly to prevent complications.
