Abstract: |
PURPOSE: To examine the results of the Newborn Hearing Screening State Program of Minas Gerais in 2011 in relation to the quality indicators proposed by the multiprofessional committee on auditory health (COMUSA). The following quality indicators were screened for: realization of the screening index (>95%), number of newborns screened during the first month of life, and number of newborns referred for a full hearing assessment (less than 4%). CASE REPORT: A database analysis from January 2011 to December 2011 revealedquality indicators related to the screening steps. We screened 37,638 newborns, i.e., 14.9% of the births. Of these, 24,181 (64.2%) were evaluated during the first month of life and 671 (1.8%) were chosen for a full hearing assessment. CONCLUSION: The Newborn Hearing Screening State Program of Minas Gerais met only 1 of the 3 indicators evaluated. It is suggested that adoption of strategies such asincrease in accredited maternities, capacity of professionals, implantation of information systems integrated with full hearing assessment and therapy services, and other newborn hearing screening services.
