OBJECTIVE: To analyze the audiologic findings in children with Down's syndrome who undergo speech therapy. METHODOLOGY: We evaluated 19 children (10 boys and 9 girls; age, 10-11 years) with Down's syndrome who were undergoing speech therapy. All children underwent meatoscopy, pure tone audiometry, and speech audiometry with figures at the Audiology Clinic of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul [UFRGS]). RESULTS: Of the 19 children evaluated, 9 showed some kind of alteration in the audiologic evaluation. Seven of these patients had conductive hearing loss, 4 moderate and 3 mild, 1 had moderate sensorineural hearing loss, and 1 had moderate mixed hearing loss. CONCLUSION: We found that 47.4% of the children evaluated showed had some kind of alteration in the audiologic evaluation. The findings reinforce the importance of preventive evaluations in children with Down's syndrome and consequential speech and hearing interventions.
