OBJECTIVE: To verify the variable auditory loss and speed of presentation of the verbal stimulation in the recognition of speaks in aged. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The study was carried through in the Laboratory of Auditory Prosthesis of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM). 57 citizens, divided in two groups, one had been evaluated constituted of 31 aged normal-listeners and another one for 26 aged ones with auditory loss. All had been submitted to the tests Lists of Sentences in Portuguese and Lists of Delayed Sentences in Portuguese, in order to make possible the attainment of the Indices of Recognition of Sentences in Silence and the Noise and of the Indices of Recognition of Delayed Sentences in Silence and the Noise. RESULTS: The aged ones without auditory loss investigated had presented better resulted to the presentation of the sentences in slow speed, when compared with the gotten ones with the presentation in typical speed, with statistical significant difference, when evaluated in silence (p=0,001690*), but not in the noise (p=0,131644). Already the aged ones with auditory loss had presented better resulted, with statistical significant difference in such a way in silence (p=0,047283*), how much in the noise (p=0,002030*), when evaluated with sentences in diminished speed. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of the present research evidence that aged, the independent one of the peripheral hearing, benefits with respect to the recognition of the heard message, when say it are carried through in slower speed in silence. How much to the speak in the noise, had been shown indications that aged with auditory loss benefits more than those with auditory normality, when says it is presented in diminished speed.
