INTRODUCTION: the vocal standard of the aged one can be justified by structural alterations in the recurrent vocal folds of the senility process. One of these alterations can be related to the thickness of the proper blade and the epithelium of covering of the vocal folds. OBJECTIVE: to study by means of morph metric the alterations in the thickness of the epithelium and the proper blade of the vocal folds of aged. METHODS: vocal folds of autopsy of 15 aged ones above of 60 years had been used, and of five adults between 30 and 50 years for formation of the group it has controlled. The aged ones had been subdivided by age group (60 the 69; 70 the 79 and above of 80 years). The vocal folds had been removed in cuts longitudinal and unblocked in paraffin, being carried through cuts with 4 µm of thickness for preparation of the stoned blades for H&E (Hematoxilina and Eosina) and SHOVELS (Acid periodic-Schiff). The blades had been photographed and the morphometric carried through the program Image J, measuring it thickness of the proper blade and the epithelium (in µm). RESULTS: In the measure of the epithelium, we observe difference in the thickness of the group of 70 the 79 years and above of 80 years when compared with the group has controlled (57,450µm, 48,359µm and 61,732µm respectively). We observe reduction in the measures of the proper blade, of the three groups of aged when compared with the group has controlled (60-69 years-351,474µm; 70-79- 369,530µm, above of 80-331,266µm and GC-394,779µm). CONCLUSION: the carried through morphometric measures in the larynges of aged had in such a way identified reduction in the thickness of the epithelium how much of the proper blade, what it could justify the presbiphonia picture.
