Abstract: |
Introduction: The use of medicinal plants is a very old practice, and the Ginkgo biloba extract 761 is one of the
most sold products, probably due to its many clinical indications.
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy, safeness and tolerability of the Ginkgo biloba extract 761 in tinnitus control.
Methods: 40 patients consecutively seen due to tinnitus as main complaint, associated or not to other cochlear
or vestibular symptoms, were included in this study. The inclusion evaluation was performed by
the same professional, using a medical and audiological protocol. All patients received 120mg of
Ginkgo biloba extract 761 twice a day for 60 days. Two other professionals evaluated the efficacy,
safeness and tolerability of the extract in order to avoid induction of responses.
Results: There were 57.5% of favorable responses, including abolition and improvement of tinnitus. Adverse
reactions occurred in 3 patients (7.5%), but only one discontinued the treatment before the end
of the study.
Conclusions: The Ginkgo biloba extract 761 presented satisfactory results regarding efficacy, safeness and tolerability
in tinnitus patients, when administered in the dosage of 120mg twice a day for 60 days.
