Abstract:

Introduction: Tinnitus possibly affects more than 28 millions of Brazilians. Many otolaryngologists show difficulty in managing these patients, once tinnitus is a subjective symptom related to systemic and emotional factors, needing enlargement of the routine ENT evaluation. Among patients with important repercussion in their quality of life, it is common the wish to meet others in similar situation. Aim: To describe the creation and the present methodology of Brazilian Tinnitus Support Group (GAPZ), to evaluate its preliminary results as coadjuvant option to tinnitus control and to propose future strategies of actuation in different places. Methods: The GAPZ involves lectures and discussion among the participants in mensal meetings coordinated by an expert professional team. Its preliminary results were evaluated by an anonymous questionnaire applied to all participants present in the last meeting of 2001, which included evaluation of tinnitus annoyance before and after going to the GAPZ. Patients who went to only one reunion were excluded. The final sample consisted of 23 questionnaires. Results: Reported improvement in tinnitus 73,91% annoyance and 94,1% credited it to the presence in GAPZ. Such improvement was higher in patients who went to more than 5 reunions. Conclusion: The GAPZ methodology differs from other groups and seems to be efficient as a coadjuvant option to tinnitus control. We suggest the formation of similar groups in others localities.
