Introduction: Laryngeal cancer in our industry is one of the most frequent causes of consultation, both in the emergency service, such as selective for receiving surgical treatment. Objective: To determine the prevalence of complications after surgery for patients in whom total laryngectomy was performed. Method: We conducted a descriptive and retrospective study at the Hospital of the Clinics of Otolaryngology in the last five years. The universe was comprised of a total of 42 patients entered with the diagnosis of laryngeal cancer, 28.5% (12) of which total laryngectomy was performed. If ruled out other surgical techniques. The data were obtained from medical histories, taking into account age, sex, use of drainage in the surgical bed, nasogastric tube and complications. Results: Of the total laryngectomy, the commitment of the supraglottis was 50%, 66.6% (8) introduce complications. The group of patients between the ages 53-80 years old were those more frequently underwent surgical treatment, males predominated with 100% (12). The most frequent complication was pharyngocutaneous fistula which represented 50% (6) of the complications, 16.6% (2) bleeding at the surgical site, followed by pus from the wound in 8.3% (1), where the cause was the presence of myiasis upper posterior. Conclusions: Complications of laryngeal cancer are presented frequently, affecting the evolution and recovery of post surgical patient.
