RETROSPECTIVE STUDY OF A SERIES OF PATIENTS WITH CHOANAE ATRESIA
ESTUDO RETROSPECTIVO DE UMA SÉRIE DE PACIENTES COM ATRESIA DE COANAS

Abstract:

Objective: To know the clinical and surgical characteristics of the patients with choanae atresia unilateral or bilateral taken care of in a tertiary hospital of the south of Brazil. Material and method: Retrospective studies through the systematic revision of handbooks of submitted patients the handling of the choanae atresia. Results: 18 patients between 2000 and 2012 had been enclosed. Of these, 12 (66.6%) presented bilateral atresia, 77.8% were mixing and 22.2%, osseous. Of the 12 patients with bilateral atresia, nine presented malformations associates, being three with CHARGE. Of the six patients with unilateral atresia, only two presented bad formations associates. All the patients with unilateral atresia had needed only one surgical intervention, while the patients with bilateral atresia had needed a average 2,85 procedures, varying of one the five to get the patency of the choanae. As complementary procedures, only one in case that unilateral one used mitomicina while in bilateral group seven they had used stent, five, mitomicina and four, dilatation. The medium one of the surgery in the patients with unilateral atresia was 6 years varying of 6 months the 18 years. Of the patients with bilateral atresia, he was 35 days varying of 4 days the 6 years. Conclusion: The tax of success of the presented endoscopic boarding in literature varies of 62 the 100%. However, the majority of the series presents its results without considering joined or bilaterality. In the opinion of the authors of this work, these results would have to be presented separately therefore are about different, patient presentations clinical distinct (considering bad formations associates) and very discrepant taxes of reestenose.
