OBJECTIVES: To study the anatomical relationships of the facial nerve to the parotid gland, in embalmed corpses, Laboratory of Human Anatomy, School of Health Sciences University of Amazonas State ESA / UEA, analyzing the frequency of presentation of the anatomic relationships between the facial nerve and the parotid gland and a protocol for the classification of presentations of facial nerves, from their relationship with the parotid gland. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We dissected the right lateral and / or left of the face, identifying the facial nerve and parotid glands, addressing distinctly the superficial and deep portions. Inclusion criteria were embalmed cadavers of either sex, when dissected; demonstrate clearly the relationship between the facial nerve and parotid gland. RESULTS: We performed a stepwise dissection of nine (9) embalmed cadaver anatomy labs at the University of Amazonas State. The corpses were surveyed identified fourteen (14) facial nerves which penetrated the deep lobe of the gland, since the same view was only possible after dissect and remove the parotid. In one (1) corpse was not possible to identify the facial nerve. CONCLUSION: The relationship of the parotid gland and NF in its entirety, are provided in depth, that is to say, maintain a close relation with the gland, confirming a higher incidence of nerve injuries in parotidectomies total. From this perspective, the total parotidectomy has great risk of facial nerve injury.
