Abstract:

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of percutaneous injection of calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHa) in patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis. METHODS: Two patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis (patient 1: male, 67 years old, Patient 2: female, 64 years old) underwent percutaneous injection of CaHa under general anesthesia. In the preoperative evaluation and 30 days after the procedure were collected the following parameters: maximum phonation time (TFM), perceptual analysis by GRBASH scale, performed by two experts voice phonoaudiologic, quality of life questionnaire for voice (VHI) and videolaryngostroboscopy. RESULTS: Patient 1 showed an increase of the TMF 5 seconds to 11 seconds, kept the level of hoarseness (B1 R2 G2 A0 S0 H0), HIV from 38 to 4. Patient 2 raised MPT 8 to 10. His voice was classified as G 2, R2, B1, A0, S0, preoperative H1 and G1 R1, B1, A0, S1, H0 post operative. There was reduction of HIV from 65 to 20. In stroboscopic assessment was no improvement in glottic closure and mucosal wave in two patients. CONCLUSION: The preliminary experience suggests that the service CaHa injection is an effective material for vocal cord medianization in cases of unilateral paralysis.
