Abstract: |
Amyloidosis is a disease caused by the accumulation of extracellular proteinaceous deposits with histochemical and ultra structural features. Amyloid deposits in the larynx are rare, representing 0.2 to 1.2% of benign tumors of the larynx. Amyloidosis can affect any organ tissue but when there is involvement of the larynx is a rare systemic distribution. We analyzed three cases of laryngeal amyloidosis. The topographic pattern of involvement was found: involvement of the vocal folds in one case, subglottic extension in two cases with tracheal bronchus to the right source in 1 case, 1 case of tubal Ostia, ventricular folds in 2 cases, epiglottis region in a case. The amyloid deposits may be focal, limited to a body tissue or present systemic distribution. Usually tend to evolve with slow and progressive. The larynx is rarely the first local manifestation of systemic amyloidosis. According to the literature, the ventricular region, false folds and true vocal folds are the most affected areas of the respiratory tract, which is consistent with the pattern of distribution of the cases analyzed. Since this is an unusual finding, analysis of cases of laryngeal amyloidosis may contribute to higher diagnostic suspicion in endoscopic examination of the larynx.
