OTOLARYNGOLOGICAL AND AUDIOLOGICAL DIAGNOSTICS ON THE BREATHING MODE - PRELIMINARY DATA

Abstract:

OBJECTIVE: To verify that the Otolaryngological and audiological diagnostics on the breathing mode. METHODS: The sample consisted of 12 children, between six and 12 years, seven boys and five girls. All were evaluated for cephalometric, Otolaryngological and speech avaliation. At last it was found, in addition to structural and functional conditions of the stomatognathic system, the breathing mode. It was classified, considering the usual position of the lips during the interview and clinical evaluation. The same classification was performed by otolaryngologists through the interview data, the size of the pharyngeal isthmus (cephalometry) and their own clinical judgment. Data were analyzed descriptively, as part of a project approved by the Ethics Committee of Federal University of Santa Maria. Results and CONCLUSIONS: The sample consisted of 58.33% of children was male and 41.67% female. Boys, 57.12% were mouth breathers (RO) and 42.88% nasal breathing (RN). There was divergence of diagnosis in only one case, classified by clinical assessment as RO and RN for Otolaryngological. It is noteworthy that with the assessment of the stomatognathic system the subject was allergic attack. Girls, 40% RO and 60% were infants, and there was no disagreement between the diagnoses. There is prevalence of RO in males and females in RN. From the data, there is concordance between the diagnoses considered, however, it is understood that both assessments are essential and non-exclusive for the proper progress of the therapeutic process.
