To verify the presence of hearing loss and restriction of social participation in a group of elderly visually impaired. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample consisted of individuals aged over 60 years, diagnosed with bilateral cataract surgery in pre submitted to audiological evaluation (pure tone audiometry). For the verification of participation restriction was used in the questionnaire Hearing Handicap Inventory for Elderly (HHIE) reduced version. RESULTS: The sample studied consisted of 21 individuals, 12 (57.1%) females and 9 (42.9%) were male. The age of the components of the sample ranged between 61 and 85 years old (mean 72.6 ± 7.2 years). Analyzing the thresholds of the right ear, it was found that 6 (28.6%) had normal hearing, 6 (28.6%) mild hearing loss, 4 (19%) moderate hearing loss, 4 (19%) and a severe hearing loss (4.8%) profound hearing loss. In the left ear was found that 6 (28.6%) had normal hearing, seven (33.3%) mild hearing loss, 2 (9.5%) moderate hearing loss, five (23.8%) hearing loss severe and 1 (4.8%) profound hearing loss. In the HHIE scores ranged from 0 to 40 points, averaging 11.8 ± 14.3, ten (47.6%) elders had no participation restriction, seven (33.3%) participation restriction mild to moderate and four (19%) significant participation restriction. CONCLUSION: We concluded most of the right and left ear hearing loss (71.4%) and that the restriction of participation occurred in approximately half the sample (52.4%).
