Abstract:

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between the results of the assessment of working memory and hearing loss, age, sex, educational level and socioeconomic status. METHODS: The procedures used for the evaluation of the study subjects were: history, pure tone audiometry; sub-test of working memory of the instrument NEUPSILIN brief neuropsychological assessment (Fonseca, Salles and Parente, 2009) and the Criterion Brazil (ABEP, 2012). RESULTS: A total of 34 individuals, aged between 60 and 86 years old (mean 73 years), 5 males and 29 females. With respect to hearing, it was found that 16 individuals (47.6%) had normal hearing and 18 subjects (52.94%) hearing loss from mild to severe. No association was observed between the results obtained in the assessment of working memory and hearing loss (p = 0.8). There was no association between working memory and age (p = 0.1), gender (p = 0.5), education (p = 0.3) and socioeconomic status (p = 0.2). CONCLUSION: In the elderly group assessed there was no association between the presence of hearing loss, age, gender, education and performance on tests of working memory. Further studies are being conducted to the proof of this result.
