Check if the use of aids granted by a health care hearing of the Unified Health System is maintained after a year of adaptation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An observational cross-sectional CAPPesq authorized by Protocol 0160/10. 376 adults who received the donation of hearing aids by the Brazilian Unified Health System a year ago were selected for interview by telephone about the use of amplification. The interviewer asked the individuals still retained the use of hearing aids, and if it was "both sides", "one-sided" or "no longer used hearing aids." Information was provided by the individuals themselves or by the responsible caretaker and the analysis was based on statements obtained. RESULTS: A total of 376 (100%) users of hearing aids selected for interview by telephone, 74 (19.68%) subjects could not answer the question due to problems in telephone contact, death or return of hearing aids. When considering the 302 (100%) subjects interviewed, 223 (73.84%) subjects used hearing aids bilaterally, 26 (8.61%) in only one ear and 53 (17.55%) reported having left their use. CONCLUSION: This study showed that most of the individuals involved the use bilaterally maintained after one year of adaptation and indicates the need for monitoring annual check if benefits are maintained over time.
