Abstract: |
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the PEAEE thresholds in term neonates with normal hearing, no risk factors for hearing loss in order to assess the maturation process of the responses and outline the normal ranges for the same. METHODS: Cross sectional study with 37 newborns listeners, from the Newborn Hearing Screening at Nossa Senhora da Conceição Hospital of Porto Alegre, which showed the presence of evoked otoacoustic emissions and auditory brainstem response in both ears. Upon verification of normal responses evaluated the PEAEE response at frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz bilaterally. Equipment used was Smart EP, Intelligent Hearing Systems brand. RESULTS: The mean observed in dBNA for the frequencies 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz was, to the right and left ears, the following distribution: 34.108 and 34.027, 24.649 and 25.135, 23.757 and 23.486, 25.892 and 25.865, respectively. We found a similarity between the mean values for PEAEE thresholds in both ears, regardless of gender of the newborn. We observed an inverse correlation between age and PEAEE (Pearson coefficient between -0.27 and -0.43), with a tendency to decrease in the thresholds at all frequencies in both ears with increasing age. CONCLUSION: The inverse correlation between the PEAEE thresholds obtained and age is an important observation in the assessment of neonates, as reflected normal patterns differ according to age in days, characterizing the maturation of the auditory system.
