Abstract: |
Introduction and aim: Due to its different kinds of epithelium and tissues, the nasopharynx can be the origin of a wide range of neoplasms. With the exception of endemic areas, such as the southeast of China, the tumors of this region are rare. Although the nondifferentiated carcinoma of the nasopharynx, or lymphoepithelioma, has a good response to radiotherapy, the patients continue to have poor prognosis, mostly because of late diagnosis.
Aim: The purpose of this study was to describe our experience with the clinical and therapeutic aspects of patients with the diagnosis of lymphoepithelioma.
Material and method: A retrospective study of the medical charts of 16 patients with lymphoepitheliomas treated at our department was performed.
Results: There was a clear male predominance and most patients presented with epistaxis and nasal obstruction (68,7%). Signs of tubareal dysfunction were found in 62,5% of the cases. Diagnosis was made with endoscopy of the nose and CT scans in most of the cases. All patients were treated with radiotherapy and in four cases it was not possible to achieve control of the disease.
Conclusion: The early diagnosis of these tumors is essential to improve the prognosis of the patients, and for this reason we recommend special attention in patients with signs and symptoms typical of this disease.
