PREVALENCE OF EAR FULLNESS IN THE ELDERLY ON EELO PROJECT AND PROBABLE ASSOCIATION WITH TINNITUS

Abstract:

Prevalence of ear fullness in the elderly project EELO and probable association with tinnitus. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of ear fullness in the elderly and their likely association with the sensation of tinnitus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study in UNOPAR in Londrina-PR, with 503 subjects of both genders, with a median age of 69 years old, the project participants EELO through self-reported questionnaire. RESULTS: For statistical analyzes we used the Bio Stat 5.0 software. Of the 503 subjects, 73 (14.51%) complained of ear fullness and 430 (85.48%) did not complain of ear fullness. Of the 73 complainants ear fullness, 38 (52.05%) had tinnitus and 35 (47.94%) did not. Of the 430 did not complain of fullness in the ear, 179 (41.62%) had tinnitus and 251 (58.37%) did not. Normality test was performed D'Agostino Perason, which verified the non-normality of the data. Then held the Mann Whitney obtaining the value U = 90288.50 p <0.0001. This result indicates that there is a significant statistical difference between ear fullness and tinnitus. CONCLUSION: From this study we verified the association between fullness and tinnitus in individuals over 60 years old. This study highlights the importance of knowing the symptoms of hearing elderly population and to determine their probable associations, since it can alert health professionals with regard to prevention and rehabilitation auditory health, aiming to improve quality of life of the population.
