Abstract:

INTRODUCTION: Hearing loss is often reported in the elderly, and can cause serious damage to the behavioral, emotional and members. The hearing loss can also be connected to the decrease in cognitive function. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between cognitive impairment and hearing loss in a group of adults and elderly by checking the influence of sex and age. Method: Participants were 59 subjects aged between 30 and 86 years old, 50 (85%) women with a mean of 68 years and 9 (15%) men with a mean age of 70. The subjects were submitted to the mini-metal test (MMSE) and pure tone audiometry performed in acoustically treated. RESULTS: Data analysis showed that 68% of the subjects hearing loss in at least one ear, with the majority (45.7%) had mild hearing loss. With respect to cognition, it was found that six (10.16%) subjects showed results indicative of cognitive impairment, and 5 subjects (83.3%) had mild or moderate hearing loss. Among these five subjects, four were female and one male. The age variable did not influence the results. CONCLUSION: Individuals with a result suggestive of cognitive impairment hearing loss. Sex and age did not influence the results.
