INTRODUCTION: The misuse of equipment electronically amplified music can cause hearing loss and hearing signs and symptoms and extra-auditory. OBJECTIVE: To determine usage habits, hearing complaints and receiving information from students about hearing loss induced by high levels of sound pressure. METHODS: we applied a questionnaire containing open and closed questions prepared for this study to students of primary and secondary schools in Porto Alegre - RS. RESULTS: A total 374 students and 158 male (42.2%) and 216 (57.8%) were female. Their ages ranged between 10 and 22 years old (average 14.11). These were among the 5th grade of elementary school and 3 years of high school. It was found that 333 (89%) were using equipment electronically amplified music. The daily time of use ranged from reported 10 minutes to 24 hours, and 250 (66.84%) reported use up to 5 hours a day, maximum intensity (64.7%). In the frequency of use week, 150 (48.9%) reported using seven days a week. When asked about complaints of hearing difficulties, 112 (30.1%) reported trouble hearing notice. Only 127 (34.1%) reported having received information about the effects of noise in the body. CONCLUSION: It was found that most teenagers presented daily usage habits of inadequate use of music. A third complained of hearing loss. The lack of information on the effects of music on high intensity in the body was also prevalent in this sample.
