Abstract:

Introduction: Choanal atresia is a failure in the development of the communication between the posterior nasal cavity and the nasopharynx. Objective: To evaluate surgical correction of choanal atresia through transnasal approach with endoscopes in a tertiary care center. Patients and Methods: Six patients with choanal atresia who underwent transansal endoscopic repair from 1997 to 2000 were evaluated. All atresias were bony and mixed on computed tomography scans. Four cases were unilateral and two bilateral, female to male ratio was 1:1 and age ranged from four days to 28 years old (average 12,3 years). The mean time of stenting was 64,6 days. Results: Choanal patency was achieved in 83,3% of the patients. One patient required revision surgery because of recidivant stenosis. Conclusions: This technique is an option with low morbidity and mortality and constitutes an efficient approach to treat choanal atresia.
