Abstract: |
Introduction: The vestibular schwannoma, a benign tumor that originates from the Schwann cells in the eighth cranial nerve, may presents clinically as sudden hearing loss (SHL), whose broad differential diagnosis can make difficult a clinical investigation. However, after suspicion, otoneurology and radiology, in particular the magnetic resonance imaging, offer valuable complementary semiology for vestibular schwannoma diagnosis.
Case report: The authors report an unusual case of a patient with SHL whose empiric treatment with systemic corticosteroid and vasodilator caused complete improvement of audiologic state, suggesting a clinical or idiopathic etiology. However, the follow-up revealed a vestibular schwannoma.
Conclusion: Auditory recovery after conservative management of SHL does not exclude vestibular schwannoma. An otoneurological and radiological investigation should always be performed in patients presenting sudden hearing loss.
